On a beautiful, sunny fall Sunday morning, people gathered in a high school parking lot to support the Hopkinton Center for the Arts.
Anand has been part of their adaptive program for almost two years now. When we got the email about the 5K fundraiser, he was really excited and wanted to walk the 5K to support the program.
So many people gathered there! About 90% of them were walking or running, while a very few of us were standing on the sidelines! Most parents walked with their children. The cutest part was watching the younger children participate in the 100-meter run.
What a wonderful way to encourage children to give back to the community, get people involved in fundraising, and promote a healthy lifestyle!
There were younger parents running with kids in strollers, and so many parent-child duos walking, jogging, and running together. People wore costumes, there was a costumed dog contest, and there were food, games, and prizes. It was a fun morning for everyone.
I am sure I cannot jog with Anand, but I would definitely love to walk with him next year!
What stayed with me the most was the number of Indian families I saw. I noticed so many Indian middle school and high school students, along with Indian moms and dads walking with their children.
It was very heartwarming to see the Indian community participating in these kinds of events. This is the festival season, and I was so glad to see families spending their Sunday morning walking and running together instead of being busy with festival lunches, breakfasts, or cleaning the house.
It reminded me that giving back to the community and spending time together as a family can be simple and fun.
And that is one more good reason for me to nurture my knee, get better, and be ready to walk the 5K next year — with my rockstar son! ❤️
All proceeds support the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, a nonprofit organization that fosters local arts education and community programs.
