It wasn’t warmest of Sunday in New England but those 10
mothers wanted to create something for their children and here they were, at a
playground in a tiny suburban town. Many of them drove more than 35-40 minutes
to spend an hour with some other moms whom they never met. But they wanted to
create an opportunity for their children who had no idea who the other moms or
kids were. But that’s how we dream and make them reality, isn’t it?
Four months ago, when we met first time they didn’t know how
that dinner will play out in their life. They all were there “to give it a try”
which was someone else’s vision. But I knew what I was envisioning it wasn’t just
for me it was much bigger than it seemed that night. It was a dream, a dream of
having a village of our own, where we belonged without judgement.
After four dinners and having a desi group of our own with
over 110 moms, they decided it was time to take another step. Mom’s network
decided to create children’s network. Two of the moms took initiative and an
idea was born. The biggest challenges our kids face is socialization. So many unsuccessful
stories of social groups. Today we had witnessed a success story unfold. Kids from
different age and capabilities came together, did Easter egg hunt and played
some games. It was the moms who decided that they will create a better social
group for their children within this village.
Today that play ground in Sudbury didn’t host a playdate it
turned a dream into a reality, created a path and gave a hope to many of us. I don’t
think I can ask for a better beginning of Autism Awareness month.. Dream on
ladies.. Lets make our own path..
