What do you owe to your Community, Town, State and Nation?

Few days ago a dear friend who is actively involved in the community and state politics sent an invite. I usually shy away from these events, don’t understand much about politics, policies - is my reason. People who knew me in my teens would be surprised to hear that. Those days I knew whatever was going on in the world, would read and listen to everything happening and had my own opinion about everything. I think motherhood changed me drastically and somehow the “bigger issues” lost it’s importance for me. The 2016 election was the last nail in the coffin. I stopped watching news and once a while will read online. Totally lost on Indian politics and have no intention of knowing or talking about it.

The injustice, biases, prejudices and meanness annoys me to the core.

I know avoiding and ignoring are not the solution to anything but at some point I had to decide if being “aware” was really worth the stress.

Soon building a community for Special needs families gave me the satisfaction of giving back to my community.

The invite was for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Asian American Commission’s unity dinner.

The night was all about celebrating the place of Asians in the modern American society. It was wonderful to see/hear and celebrate so many “firsts”. People who paved the way for future generation. Hearing the voice of young and emerging leaders was very promising.

Unless you witness this first hand you won’t even know what is going on in your community, state and Nation. The first generation immigrants feel the gratitude and don’t question but the next generation knows what their parents endured and they want to make sure their voice is heard and their contribution to the society is valued and admired as well.

Have you been through this ? Do you feel the day to day life and struggles keep you away from giving your dues to the society? Are you contributing enough? Do you think of others? Or what is your way of giving back to community?
